Organic Chemistry II

Description:
13. Official Course Description: Chemistry 202 introduces students to the major organic families that were not covered in the first-semester course. They include aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acid and derivatives, polyenes, aromatics, and amines. Biologically important families are also covered; these families include carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, and proteins. A major theme of the semester is the formation and reaction of carbanions. Emphasis is placed on reaction mechanisms that involve enols, enolates, and electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions. Important name reactions of organic chemistry are presented. The fundamentals of spectroscopy and synthesis are interwoven into the instruction to reinforce and expand the concepts from the first semester. CHM 202 is a three-hour course. The two-hour companion lab, CHM 204, must be taken on campus.
